in this case the bug that looked the most like a leaf didnt get eaten and could pass on their genes. At the same time birds got better at detecting what is a leaf and what a bug and the ones that were most successfull ate more bugs and passed on their genes more. Do this for thousand of generations and you get pic related.

Random mutation makes the butterfly 1% more brown. The 1% more brown butterflies survive and reproduce. Repeat till very brown. At the same time the random mutation of the butterflies that have a more leaf like texture survive in the same way. These keep breeding till you end up with a brown leaf like disguised butterfly.

Humans bred bananas to be that way. They used to be small with lots of seeds and sucked to eat.

for me what really sold this as being a leaf was the 'missing' chunk on the left/rear. If it has kids the ones with the ass chunk would be more successful at hiding, from me at least. Hope that answers your question.

in our biological history, I'm guessing it derived from being able to see fruit more easily. And was based on a 'fucked up' rod cell that started detecting specific wavelengths of light. That's just my guess
