It's like saying Microsoft or Google is bad. Microsoft or Google do not give two shits, but people and bad actors withing Google or Microsoft will intentionally pevert the core values of the company. Same is true for religio, though religion tries to explain the meaning of life as best it can to help the most survive (and should not be seen as some stepping stone to atheism). Religion, in all sense of the word, is learned behaviour of a group of like minded people trying to describe life, sentience, and the 'plight of man'.
