>>16240044i think it mostly just has to do with all the professors wanting to give students freedom to approach assignments in the way best for them which is admirable in thoery, but in practice it ends up meaning that people often end up not being sure what the actual criteria are
this is actually a really good example of that. we were told that there weren't any specific requirements for what we were translating, but we had to lock in decisions before seeing that most of the class was going to be ~20 minute power point presentations going through our text line by line
originally i chose this anime because my listening skills are weak, i was interested in the additional layer of difficulty timing subs to real-time speech, and i felt that getting through a large volume of content was more valuable than fewer difficult lines. all this is fine in theory, but doing audio makes putting things into a powerpoint 100x more cumbersome and having to present every single line in front of the class means it's totally unreasonable to translate more than a few minutes of content each week
so ultimately the format of the class means that the presentations are harder for me to put together than the translations themselves and i'm not getting the large volume of practice i had in mind when making my decision. i would've been just as happy picking a dense manga with a different set of goals in mind, but any time anyone asked about expectations before committing to a piece they'd just be reassured that whatever they're most interested in would be fine
