They're the descendants of leopards and pumas that were released into wild in the 70s when the government brought in strict licencing rules nobody could be bothered with
For a while in the 60s and 70s it was really cool to have them as pets but too many people got into the craze and the government said everyone should have proper enclosures for them
People just took them to the woods and let them go instead of doing the paperwork and building cages
For years they lived high up in the hills and deep in the forests and people thought they were just a myth
At the beginning of covid we had months of lockdown and with very little traffic on the roads the cats started to explore closer to towns
Now they know how to sneak around all over the place without seeing too many people but sightings have massively increased because a big leopard or puma can't just wander around the edge town looking for deer and rabbits without anyone noticing
