perhaps, i'm more thinking that it's just been so long that it's likely my tastes have changed. there are also some shows that are better when you're familiar with genre tropes and such, so it's that's a possibility as well
for example last season there was an anime called engage kiss that i'd never recommend to anyone who doesn't already watch a lot of anime. i enjoyed it a lot, but what it does best is give the audience crazy mixups by subverting tropes that are so common you might not even realize you think you know what's coming then also just playing some of those tropes straight. great show, but it just doesn't really work if you're not at a stage in your life where your reaction to seeing a lazy, unspectacular protagonist getting fought over by multiple girls isn't "right, sure"
