I believe that over time God saw his influence fading and people becoming less violent as a way to mirror God, as God made man in his image. I imagine it was God who realised that being wrathful is pointless since the people will just imitate Him, so He decides to influence people less and be a calmer being, and as time went on we stopped killing each other for no real reason(to a certain extent) and God took notice, leaving us to handle ourselves as our own people, only sometimes using His power on those that still worshiped Him like the old testament.
