Freon is a fucked up industry. The old tanks of the gasses that are banned now go for like 500-1000$. For a fucking tank of gas. Lots of money was being made flipping this stuff the past couple years

Isobutane is a direct replacement for R-12 and R-22. Used in some commercial systems it's not allowed in cars or residential AC units. Literally can be picked up at Walshart. As a gas very little health effects useless you sit there seriously inhaling it. Not a concern for the ozone layer. Lowest concern amongst refrigerants as a greenhouse gas. Can be burned off after use to make relatively harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor unlike fluorocarbons. Little explosive concern as so such a small charge needed for car or residential units. If it did ignite under pressure it would probably barely be addible just a shock of something making a small boom noise. Albeit it would probably ruin a system and need replacing, but it has been in use and can be designed with safe guards.

ALL THE FREON EVER PUT INTO CARS IS ALL IN THE ATMOSPHERE ANYWAY.

Running off memory here

Propane or r-290 is the drop-in replacement for r-12 and maybe r-22

Propane can also be used in r410a systems like dehumidifiers

Canned computer duster is actually r-152 and is a drop in AND completely compatible replacement for r-134a, like you don't even need to purge the old stuff.

Butane, or r600 is moving to replace R134A in home refrigeration systems

The future is propane and butane

The problem is that cars have a small interior volume, so that if the evaporator leaked (common) it would easily make an explosive mixture inside. Imagine opening the door on your car and it blows up like a grenade. Don't use flammable refrigerants in small spaces, simple. It's allowed in commercial only in small systems (cooks drawers, cold rails, etc.) in large rooms (kitchens)

I can't see Canada ever switching to butane for residential A/C either. Legally our Natural Gas systems for residential can only be a maximum 2psi, while 7-14in. wc is most common. Having butane at 300psi in an A/C system seems like something they would never approve.

I don't know anything about the natural gas pressures but the ac is a self contained unit and that 300psi loops back around to the compressors intake to get recompressed so it's not wasting anything besides energy, whick isn't a big deal and there's more of a coronation of "energy used my temperature cooled" correlation than the is psi in the system to energy used", even thinking of this fun a legal standpoint.
Youre not going to cool a house and be energy efficient at the same time

I don't understand why this is the case. CO2 dusters used to be easily available, were cheaper, and most importantly, were NOT FLAMMABLE unlike this shit. Whose bright idea was it to sell explosive gas to spray on electrical equipment?

That's some real expensive phosgene, making it from household chemicals is so much cheaper.
I accidentally made some myself by spraying a ''non flammable brake cleaner'' on a hot surface, just a little bit felt like a hard hit on my chest and shortness of breath for a few minutes, pretty fucking nasty stuff
