I remember it very well, the whole family was watching. Immediately after the race was over I left with my mom to run some errands for my great grandparents. It wasn't immediately clear how bad the accident was. But that's possibly just because I was 9 years old. After going to town, we went to my great grandparents house. I stayed in the car and my mom left her phone in the car too. It was a flip phone, and it had a pink case with a hand on it. Those cases with the hand were popular back then, but I can't think of what they were called. The phone received 3 phone calls while I was alone in the car. I didn't answer because I'm autistic and my mom didn't like me answering her phone anyway. I got a feeling something was wrong, why else would they be calling 3 straight times? When we got back home I learned what the phone calls were about. Since it was the Daytona 500 there were a lot of people around. I got many consolidations from family and family friends. One guy who was a Rusty Wallace fan even admitted that Dale was better than Rusty that night. We used to have silly arguments about it the way adults and kids do.
