Because the thing that took the picture is too close to the earth, the real image would normally take up half a room, but nasa compressed it down to a small picture but along with that comes certain distortions.

This is basically what you would get if you took what you saw if you pressed you face right up against a globe and then compresed what you saw into a small image.

The main principlease is that the closers you get to a globe, the less of it you can see, so when something is as close to earth as what took this picture what is right below it looks bigger than it would further out.

Every single photo we have of Earth is stitched together from satellite images, and each artist does the scale differently. We DON'T HAVE A SINGLE PHOTO from outside low-Earth orbit. NOT ONE.
