I knew an old timer who was in navy and they said they were ordered to stand on deck and face a certain way as they did above ground nuke testing, they then measured the outcome on the men.
The most batshit rumor in my family is my Uncle who went to nam, he was an asshole but we think he pissed off the wrong person. He showed up one day at a relative's house and the story is he was raving about them installing a metal plate in his head and that they were beaming voices into his head that wouldn't stop. Family let him stay the night, but in the morning he had disappeared, probably into the woods. No prior history of any mental problems.
