They think initial independence for themselves means ignoring everything their parents intend or guide them towards.
If you act fucking weird about it and don't shower them with love, they'll instinctively try to get it elsewhere. It'll make for awkwardness and they'll become obsessed with attention from others, seek validation from anyone, and be emotionally fragile and socially inept with poor self-esteem, which can lead them to be easily manipulated or exploited.
