i watched Band of Brothers recently and they said the germans living near the camps claimed to have never smelled the rotting and burning of the bodies, nor where they ever aware of the camps. It got me thinking. Surely you would smell the absolute filth and death from miles of away, especially since you can smell cow fields and chicken coops. This would be 1000x as putrid and would make life practically unlivable in the area.
