You know Spanish, don't you? I'm currently reading an English translation of The Autumn of the Patriarch but you could read it in the original. Or if you want something historical that isn't a history book you could do like Madokanon and read a memoir instead, provided you don't mind the subjectivity. Storm of Steel is a good one if you are interested in WW1. I haven't read any related to the book you mentioned though, I'm sorry.

The writing tends to be subpar, they lack the same subtlety and can't seem to rid themselves of genre conventions. That's not to say you can't play one for fun every now and then. Some do bring up interesting concepts. Planetarian and Saya no Uta are the best VNs I've played if you would like to try another.
