In German the same wording with the equivalent conjugation would be grammatically correct, but it would sound sloppy and rural
the copula is just unnecessary there, you would normally just say “the heater work fine” and add a “be” to indicate the subjunctive

it's a quirk of the black/urban dialect specifically, which appears more sloppy like it would in German

I learned the term "infinitive" itself from a book "american apartheid" but I can't recall much more than that

for the grammar, think of the following sesame street scene: cookie monster is sick in bed, and the grouch is eating a cookie

who IS eating a cookie? grouch
who BE eating cookies? cookie monster

even though CM isn't eating a cookie in the given scene, it's often the thing he does. this is an informal form of English that is remarkably consistent throughout the country (according to american apartheid)

the irrealis mood is most often used in indirect speech to make a statement without an admission to the truthfulness of the statement
simple example:
“He says, that I am stupid”. The grammar here implies that him saying that you are stupid is a factual statement. With the irrealis mood it would be worded as “He says, that I be stupid”. Worded like that the speaker doesn't make a judgement on the truthfulness of the statement and leaves it open for interpretation.

yeah; there's a lot about Afghanistan I'd like to not adopt, but the decentralized fighting force, and 200-year-old farms that don't even know what taxes are, would be lovely additions to the US
