In Islam and Buddhism, taking loans is considered to be a sin because it is making eternal profit (theoretically) and usury is reprehensible.
However, Hinduism MANDATES usury. Manusmriti (the Hindu Legal text) fixes interest rates on loans. This made Hindus who migrated to Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, become moneylenders, and even today in places like Phillippines, Indians are associated with moneylending.
Being a moneylender is basically being a cunning leech, and as a result such ethnicities get the most hatred.
It's also where the phrase "If you see an Indian and a snake, kill the Indian first" comes from in East Asian / SE Asian lanfguages.
