Last thread got shut down.
We were discussing the possible ending to Kubricks film Eyes Wide Shut.

A couple of theories were thrown around.
Among them was from an Australian poster who posted this...

Our film festival this year focused on the films of Stanley Kubrick, the hermetic master who obsessed over every film he made, often driving his actors to near madness. Kubrick was a perfectionist, and had an unusual level of control over his films, as the studio almost never stepped in to reign in some of his more, let’s say eccentric traits. His films have an incredible level of detail, often not even seen by the camera, for example in his Barry Lyndon, even the underwear the actors wore had to be hand made in the style of 18th century England. Or in his 2001: A Space Odyssey, the cave women costumes had “breasts” that would lactate real milk so the babies (played by real baby monkeys) would latch on and feed.

I decided to include Eyes Wide Shut at the end of the film festival as we had the prints, even though it was Kubrick’s last film and the festival was focused on his early, black and white films.

Kubrick sent the movie to Warner Brothers complete, and after he died Warner Brothers cut the last 23 minutes of the film. At the end of the cut version of the film you can see Tom Cruise's daughter taken away by two men in trench coats. My ending was complete fabrication, a mix of frazzledrip and blood libel. I've said it before: Kubrick films have layers of meaning. Eyes Wide Shut on the surface is about a young socialite and his wife being recruited to join a sex club for rich perverts, but it turns out to be more of a cult. Kubrick's intention was to make a great movie and he did. Yes his movies are deep especially compared to your typical Hollywood film. And hand waving that away as intellectual navel gazing is lazy thinking.
Look, movies are intentionally made to hide the fact you are watching actors on a stage, mostly through film editing. Kubrick took it a step further and hid levels of meaning in his films, often multiple overlapping meanings. The Shining is probably the densest collection of subtexts in any of his movies. But again, like any good director, Kubrick shows, not tells. Most people don't understand that the surface level meaning of 2001: A Space Odyssey is about aliens accelerating human evolution, and a dire warning about AI. That's literally just the script as written but for a 2 hour 19 minute film there is only 12 minutes of dialog total. He shows and does not tell, and most people just let movies wash over them and miss all the details right under the surface, but movies were designed to wash over you. You just need to notice details and pay attention and think while you watch. This is why I love Kubrick's movies so much and am a bit obsessed with them, which is part of the reason I wrote that story about Eyes Wide Shut.

Kubrick started his career as a photographer for Look magazine, so that makes sense. His first film was a documentary called "The Day of the Fight". I think all if his films have a documentary feeling to him, especially with his use of title cards (words on the screen to explain date and locations).
