Time Machine by Wells was very good. Although i surely wasn't expecting so much social commentary when i started it.
I'm going to read all of his stuff now.

Writers like Wells are only interested in genre as far as they can use its elements to explore their ideas in specific ways. Most of those who came after the pioneers of science fiction gradually became more interested in the elements themselves rather than how they can be used to convey something more complex. Anyway, you could read The Island of Doctor Moreau next.
