Yeah I can't lie to myself anymore either. I even had a kundalini awakening and felt the Holy Spirit flowing through me but I realized that as far as we can tell it's just a survival mechanism. God is most likely just an egregore, and there's no way to know if it's anything beyond that. The world is a very cruel and unforgiving place. Children and babies die for nothing. If all our suffering is for some reason then why do children and babies die horrible deaths? Religious people can explain this away however they want but after enough thought these things just don't make sense. Also, people who do awful things in life get ahead and become very wealthy. Nice guys finish last. Ruthless people become successful. Even if God does exist he seems to favor evil.

It isn't vanity. It's literally survival of the fittest and those who are willing to fight to survive. Some fight harder than others and gain more because of that. They live more comfortable lives than those who don't fight ruthlessly. Christianity and meditation is just a way of opting out of that game and become an ascetic. It's a cope.
