Brief Review:

Mega Man Zero 1 : First played it many years ago and I replayed it a couple day ago. I am very passionate about the X series so I may go on tangents.
To get this though out of the way, there is something so incomplete and scrapped about Mega Man Zero 1. Unlike any of the other installments the the Level Missions connect seamlessly as an Open World atmosphere. The desert is East to the Resistance base, South under is the Subway, and furthest West is the Scrapyard (Reploid Graveyard). I get he impression the early development of the Zero series was conceptually akin to the "Metroidvania" genre (ZX and Advent idea explored the idea).
Story: It feels very inconsistent and abandons a lot of the previous story lines and history of the previous games). I bring up two questions: Where the fuck is Axl? Why did they scrap the idea of X going insane and empty with sorrow after a century of fighting(Maverick)?
As far as the Axl question I suppose he was suddenly introduced too late. The X question? Not sure, X4 foreshadows the the day even X goes Maverick, he said so himself after the Space Colony fight. The Elf Wars are not thoroughly explained in the first or even second game, each installment elucidates the conflict (typical Capcom drip feed story telling). I'll end the my thoughts here.
Gameplay: The ranking system is severly strict, so much so it is impossible to achieve an S rank unless you hate your guts to the core. I just ignore it since there are no incentives to achieving a good rank. You only need the Z-saber and Z-buster, the rod is completely uses and heavy when the game is about high-octane reflexes and movement. The most detracting aspect of this installments gameplay is the leveling-up system. Absolutely STUPID and time wasting. You need to for train for 5 minutes just to unlock a second and third swipe. As for the Elves, again, egregious as the game is frugal with the Energy Crystals. Half-an-hour just to gain another bar of health. Miserable. I give it 6/10
