You can do this with professions too like Lehrerin (female teacher), Kanzlerin (female chancellor) and so forth. And what they are doing is to unnecessarily name the feminine form of a word alongside the generic form because everything else would be sexist, and this causes many strange abbreviations in the written speech, and unnatural ways of speaking
