at home if I work with metals i use the metric system because its more accurate when it comes to small details. but if I work with wood, for example making a table or shelf for my own use i just use the system we had before we switched to metric. for example when you make a fingergun sign the distance between the end of your thumb and index finger is 1 arasz, there's also greater arasz which is the distance between the end of the thumb and the pinky finger when you do the phone call sign. I also use the digits of my index finger for smaller scale things.
wood is a very living material to work with and you don't really need to do everything with super minute detail, since it will expand and contract based on a lot of factors, and I can finish what I'm making much faster than if I spent the time to care fully measure out everything.
If the US elever switched to the metric system, I imagine they will do it the same way.
