The idea that they change you in some radical way is retard cope proliferated by ignorant cowards who observe the fact that those who have no self-control destroy themselves with drugs.
Just look at how politicians handle the opioid crisis. Some politician's wife kills herself with pills and, of course, he blames the drugs and tightens restrictions on them so hard that pain patients can't get what they need and addicts just move on to heroin or fentanyl. Clearly the drug is to blame, not the fact that the woman wanted to get high to cope with her life. The husband would rather place responsibility on a chemical substance than on himself.
