the distinction between pedophile and hebephile is important when discussing japan though. being a practicing pedophile is still a crime, but it's analogous to an adult fucking a 16-17 year old in america. it's mostly tolerated but a crime and people don't like it.
being a hebephile you probably are not gonna encounter any resistance from society. it's legal as the crow flies unless you're in a position of power over the victim, say as a teacher, politician or cop.
