Any climate fags here? Why does Harvard use a flat earth model to describe the total solar irradiance? They're dividing the sunlight by 4 as if the planet is flat. Is the planet actually flat?? What the fuck is going on here?

What's the 2D projection of a sphere?
That's the surface area that the sun illuminates.
Assuming the sun is approx normal to the ground you can take a small section of the sphere at the point closest to the source where it it approximates a 2D plane with light coming in normal to the surface.
This doesn't work far from the equator or far from midday as these go past the limits of the regime that is being modeled. You can clearly see this because you won't get the same intensity of radiation at night where the model breaks down.

If I shine a flashlight onto a beach ball and divide the watts /4, this will give me the average wattage over the entire deflated beach ball laid flat. Says nothing about the intensity of the wattage shined on one side.

Because, although the Earth is an irregular oblate ellipsoid and greater precision would be enabled by treating its surface as hyperbolic instead of uniform, the very nature of its irregularity would make the calculation useless when attempting to map an average result to a specific area, or treat a specific area as an average point. Therefore it is more useful to create one equation to generate an approximate average, and specific equations based upon the topographic conditions of the area for each individual area.

Surely, an average temperature is meaningless when it comes to practicality. You understand that right? There must be a better way of calculating T on a sphere than just finding the avg. When you do this, 25% isn't enough to drive the climate. What's happening to the remaining 75%? I truly hope it isn't attributed to the so-called "back radiation".

Take the average square meter of fucking land and half of the time it will not be receiving sunlight and the other half of the time it will not be directly perpendicular to the incoming radiation. Therefore, the average is approximately one fucking fourth of total irradiance.
