there was no such thing as a Serb nation for you to identify as a part of prior to then, just as there was no Croat nation or German or French or any other nation
pre-19th century people self identified by social class not by the language and culture they belonged to so a Croat noble would feel closer with a German or Hungarian noble than with a Croat serf, same with Serbs, Serb nobles considered Turkish nobility to be closer to them than Serbian peasants

if you are referring to the Serbian kingdoms of medieval times, those were not "states" in the modern sense of the word but dynastic feudal orders (dinastijski poredak) insofar as the political unit was the personal property of the king and the nobility and thus not a state
