Those who oppose new ugly order are declared fascists, new unregulated market reforms are supposed to improve wealth of population and open incredible opportunities for getting richer, swindlers like magicians, New Age cults, or Ponzi scheme companies appear on TV and you trust them because before you knew that in the past everything that was on TV or in papers had to pass quality control. And you loose money, your job and social safety, and "red-brown fascists" turn out to be decent ordinary people led by morons.
During war a known dissident and Duma member visits local separatists and tells federal soldiers not to be afraid to surrender. Next day you see bodies of POWs, mutilated by separatists
