A southern Chinese is obviously different to a northern Chinese, a Manchurian, a Tibetan, a Mongolian, etc. There are a lot of different races in China, and mutting them together and calling the result "Han" is an insult to the original han people.
Japanese do the same thing. No, "Japanese" is not a race. Before 100 years ago, everyone understood that Yamato, Ainu, and Ryokuan are obviously different. But modern Japan created the "Japanese" race to incorporate and erase the Okinawan people and their distinct culture.
These cultures are not ethnically homogeneous at all, they just promote racemixing and call the result "Japanese" or "Han" in the same way that American mutts call themselves "white".
You could have easily picked Mongolia or Korea (excluding Jeju) as ethnically homogenous
