This is wrong. Vikings did not fight people who took a million hits to kill (like danmaku bosses), most of the time you could kill somebody in one hit if you were fighting. You had to wear them and then hit them with a killing blow.

pretty sure that canon-wise every way the player acts is an abstraction and it is more like in PoFV where both have to dodge each others attacks / spell cards (which would just be extremely difficult to implement one-on-one especially with what was possible almost two decades ago)
