Is modern welding completely 100% "safe" or do some fumes manage to crawl in and you die randomly at 55?

Adflow respirator with 9100xxi speedglass. Tig and stick welder 8 years. I dont know many really old welders fume prob shaves time off the clock but idk not a doc. Started out no respirator and would fell sick or slow after some shifts welding stainless, aluminum or inconel. Got adflow hood put organic vapor filter on it and I never feel like shit anymore and when i blow my nose after shower theres no black shit in there. Do your self a favor and defend yourself from the fume.

Fumes are still bad, the welders still don’t care. I worked with a dude who had Parkinson’s and they genuinely believe it was caused from welding and that fucker lays down some of the nicest beads. He was in his 60s shaking under the pipe and you’d never know once you saw that weld.

I don’t even weld every day but I work in a fab shop, mostly running laser or mill/lathe and I still have shit in my nose every day. Pretty well ventilated and large shop too.

Electrician here and one of the other apprentices was welding for half a day with galvanic shit and he got multiple nosebleeds that day. Way safer trades out there

Not very. And I charge $100 an hour with a 2 hour minimum.

Trades in Weimerica are looked down on but I live in a rural area that has a lack of welders that can do stainless, aluminum and titanium.

If you are going to weld, do the clean stuff. I used to be a flux core welder specifically for galvanized applications. Stick and flux core fumes can be very hazardous because of the nickel and zinc in the electrodes.

It depends on the environment, but I honestly wouldn't want to exclusively weld from age 18 to 65. Not the least because it would get old after awhile. It's a trade where you can get in and out of it and make good money fast.
I Took a few classes, got to where I could pass tig a t weld on stainless. Then set up my own machines at home and just kept trying at it til I got it. Now when my business is slow in the winter I can go weld for awhile. Thinking about buying a mobile rig when I upgrade my truck in a few years then trying it more serious. Still wouldn't want to do it every damn day for years.

I like the clean stuff. I learned to TIG weld a couple years ago for my LS swap project car. Everybody told me I should stick or mig first. My mig welds look retarded, but my TIG welds are very pretty. TIG is just more satisfying IMO.

Anyone can mig monkey with a squirt gun.

TIG is the hardest to learn but best to do with the amount of control and options. The problem is for most people is the cost of equipment.

I did tig classes and then got a cheap mig and arc welder and fucked around when I got the time. If you can tig, mig and arc are pretty easy, especially with YouTube. Almost anyone can mig weld with a little practice.

Good shit - being good with all 3 is the way to go. I'm currently doing the same. I tig when I can, but I live in the midwest and sometimes you just gotta weld through the rust.

I used to be maintenance at a factory, made tractors.
I changed the filters in the air lines they breathed, the guy who did it before, pencil wiped them, wrote new dates and never did.

Also depeneds on your workplace. Old manufacturing buildings have this metal dust combined with regular dust floating in air. Put a sheet of paper where you work, leave it undisturbed for a week, then check how white it still is. All the dust on it - you're breathing it in.
