As for why this sort of shit happens, I think it's just because for any given population the majority of people need stuff dumbed down to something simple they can grasp easily. It's not like Russia hasn't said balls to the walls dumb shit about the war to its own domestic audience either. It's just, for westoids, a lot of them, the best way to make it simple so they can grasp is popular media.
The Russian equivalent of this is calling everyone in Ukraine a nazi and saying they're "denazifying" the country. This is because WW2 means a LOT to Russians and they take a lot of national pride in being the ones who "defeated nazism" essentially, and it's affected a lot of their cultural zeitgeist. But I've noticed "nazi" in Russia has now essentially turned into a term to mean "Anyone who doesn't like Russia". I've seen a lot of ziggers call the Poles and Balts nazis too, I guess the basic logic is, since Russians defeated the nazis anyone who doesn't like Russia must be a nazi, or...something to that effect.
Hence saying "Lol we're just here to denazify" is basically the Russian equivalent of that, it's infantilising and simplifying it to a way that resonates with their domestic audience.
It's not as cringe imo as the comparisons to the heckin avatar and harry potter and LOTR and stuff but it's the same basic principle at play. Both sides need to simplify the war to a concept their retarded populace can understand and conceptualize
