If you want to understand what 4chan is for, then just look at what the site added to the predecessor sites, 4chan added backlinks and images as replies, futaba added images themselves, 2channel added to traditional forums the lack of need to register and a selection of 3-5 latest replies being displayed on the frontpage. Thus I reason that the purpose of the site, regardless of what is currently the most popular idea "4chan is for" among the "4channers", is to simply open up the first page, and join in to the stream of consciousness, add something to the hivemind, images, text, whatever, it is as simple as that.
