1. Nuclear winter is either a myth or highly exaggerated in the extent of its effects.
2. A global nuclear exchange would never have resulted in the extinction of all life on Earth, nor would it result in the end of civilization as we know it. Most of the world governments would survive. People living in rural South America and Africa wouldn't even have had much to worry about.
