I have spent time amongst traditionally masculine males (think like rough blue-collared men), and they are very loud in all instances, with some exceptions for when they sleep. They talk with a very loud voice and a harsh tone, regardless if its necessary (though this can be attributed to busted hearing/constantly having to yell to be heard at work). They burp and fart loudly without much regard for manners or social norms. They make random sounds (e.g. unnecessarily going "E-YUP!" after drilling a hole). And, generally, make quite the noise whenever the move around (heavy footsteps, moving things roughly out of their way, slamming doors, etc.)
And I asked myself: why are these men so noisy? There must be a reason. And so, I came up with an answer that agreed with the social dynamics I was in. The reason they are so noisy is because by generating pointless loud sound, they ensure that their presence takes up psychological "space" in your mind. This is done for the similar reasons when men broaden their shoulders to project confidence and dominance. In this case, the sound they produce forces you to pay attention to them, whether you want to know or not, and commands you to acknowledge their presence. Essentially, to these men, the amount of noise you make seems to correlate with the amount of confidence you have. Which would explain why the quieter men were often bullied more than others - and don't think that I refer to "4chan betas who are too anxious to order food for themselves", no, these were men on all counts, and they gladly ran their mouths too, but they just did not carry themselves as loudly as the others.
It's a rather primitive measurement to base a social hierarchy on, but nonetheless, even in the "sophisticated" land of city slickers, we still see this measurement be used on others, albeit more subtly.
