It's it really normal in the rest of the world? My wife always gets on my case when I start drinking before noon, but if I start at noon I end up going to bed at like 3am. If I start at 9am I'm in bed before midnight which I prefer because it doesn't fuck up my sleep schedule.

But it comes from the time when clean drinking water was difficult to come by.
You would have a breakfast beer which wasnt very strong but the small amount of alcohol in there would kill any bacteria which in history could be deadly to have in your water supply.
In China they developed a culture of drinking tea for the same reason. Boiling the water kills bacteria.
