Filipinos need to understand the difference between languages and dialects. there's something called mutual intelligibility and it's a percentage of how much members of supposedly different ethnolinguistic groups understand each other. LANGUAGES like Bisaya, Bikolano, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, etc, have a much lower mutual intelligibility with Tagalog (and each other), and by extension Filipino, thus cementing their status as languages, not dialects of Filipino. Dialects are variants of the language spoken in a particular area but still have a great degree of mutual intelligibility with the language. Examples include Tagalog-Batangas, Tagalog-Cavite (Tagalog-Metro Manila ). The last one is still being debated. But you get the point, the language is Tagalog, the dialect is the version of Tagalog spoken in different parts of Luzon.
