It's mostly just dumb and largely misunderstood, even by so-called "communists". I believe Marx himself hadn't thought it all through. He thought that once capitalism naturally collapses (which it never did) the people will just kinda figure out how to organize society anew. He was mostly concerned with criticizing capitalism, without offering any realistic replacement, so unsurprisingly all attempts to implement communism had little to do with the core ideas behind communism and made little economical sense.

Automation projects that we could see an unemployment wave of 30+%. Even during the height of the great depression unemployment was about 22%. Either we are going to simply let vast swaths of the populace die, or we're going to have to introduce a Universal Base Income. If we introduce UBIs we're going to have to do a LOT of work preventing it leading to genuine communism, which is unambiguously a colossal failure that cannot succeed.

Marx's single biggest failure was failing to realize that the single biggest flaw of capitalism he criticized- the inevitability of a small elite controlling almost everything- isn't unique to capitalism and in fact is actually less pronounced among capitalism than socialist societies created after it and feudalist and mercantile societies that predated it. Marx also didn't take into account the way that the actual people who occupy the income bracket of the financial elite has a high turnover rate, unlike the oppressive regime of communism.

UBI isn't socialist at all and most likely wouldn't help lead to Communism, most socialists hate the idea of it. UBI is a market based solution to a market caused problem. Notice how most people who advocate it (i.e. Musk, Gates, and Zuckerburg) are actually capitalists themselves
In the end it just makes the working class totally reliant on capitalists to supply the wealth necessary to feed them and the government to distribute that wealth to them

I never understood this dichotomy. Suppose half of the population is now unemployable, and it doesn't have money to buy the stuff produced by automation. In theory, what's preventing them from simply starting their own old-school manual-labor-based parallel economy?

Why is it a problem for you guys?
