There's nothing inherently easy about it. It's very internally inconsistent and full of arbitrary exceptions and special cases everywhere, from spelling to grammar. However, it has the huge advantage of being so widespread that you pick it up whether you want to or not.

English is easy to learn as a foreigner but very little people speak English properly even by native speakers. French is spoken almost as much as english and is worldwide plus there is one way to speak french if you know it you mastered it.
