Compare that to Europeans who used chainmail, invented full plate armor, and heavily relied on shields. European weapon were designed not so much for sharpness but instead to be slammed against a shield to make the enemy lose balance, or to be slammed over and over against steel plate armor to inflict blunt force trauma, and had a tapered point to stab at weak points in the armor.
The German long sword typically wouldn’t be that sharp that it can halve a tomato. The guy probably just custom forged it to make it that sharp. You could still use a medieval long sword to kill a guy who isn’t wearing armor with a slashing attack, but I doubt that your typical medieval long sword would have that sharp of an edge.
