if you want a sweet mead like what most people think when they see mead, you'll have to get 5 of them, which is about $110
on the other hand, you can get grape extract for 5 gallons of wine for $40, the extract is about as thick as honey, you get 1 gallon of it and it dilutes into 4 or 5 gallons of water depending on how sweet or strong you want it
if you spend a little extra for a really nice wine extract, you spend about $50-60, but regardless of what honey you use most mead will turn out the same if you just use honey and nothing else.
