It's just mythology, maybe with some sprinkling of bits and pieces of (probably hyperbolized/misremembered/skewed) real historical events. The Odyssey was kind of cool but it's not that important to read, for example.

It's possible the book says that and possible that really did happen. Though I kind of doubt it was "the Jews" in the sense of every Jewish citizen voting on it. I'm guessing it was like some group of Jewish authorities or jurists or whatever. But purely a guess. If that is actually what happened, it's definitely unfortunate. Sadly they killed all sorts of people for bizarre reasons back in that time.
