Of course they take some percentage out of the total value of the fund (there are many people in it) for fees and salaries (pic related is an example they provide), but that turns out as a very small percentage of what they take from you.
Also, the catch is that you make less than what you could make trading on your own if you knew what you were doing.
I don't know anything about trading, so I invest in funds. And it's quite sufficient for me, so I have no regrets. 5% every year of 1.2m is enough to live off of for many years (but of course it varies).
