Did you know that there were lots of famous Marines who didn't even know how to swim all the way up until the end of their service? It actually wasn't a requirement to know how to swim to join them, up until a while ago. The case was the same with lots of navys outside of the US.
And those are just Marines, the dudes who you'd expect to know how to swim. Guess how it was for every other military branch.
