It's clear normally, and then dyes are added that make it black. Studies have shown that people don't buy it if it's clear, so dyes are necessary. The consumers care more about branding than health. They'd rather have dyes in their food than drink a clear liquid.
Most soda looks like sprite until they add dyes to it.
