A fruit hat is a festive and colorful hat type popularized by Carmen Miranda and associated with warm locales. This type of hat has been worn by fashionistas, in films, by comic strip characters, and for Halloween. The fruit used tends to sit on the top or around the head, and varies in type, e.g. bananas, berries, cherries, pineapples.
The use of fruit as hat trimmings dates back to 1895, with artificial fruit adorning hats reported in various newspapers. Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda popularized fruit-adorned headdresses in the 1940s, particularly in her role as Dorita in the film The Gang's All Here. Inspired by Miranda, United Fruit Company created the anthropomorphic Chiquita Banana logo in 1944, featuring a banana with a fruit hat. The logo eventually evolved into a woman wearing a fruit hat, reflecting the public's perception of Miss Chiquita as a real person.
