Any time a pan handler comes up to me (which actually happens a lot in my city where I used to live, basically any time I was in a parking lot I had to deal with these people asking for "bus fare", "gas money", "food money" etc) I ask them their story before anything else. Most of them are lying to everyone to buy drugs so you get a mixed bag of lies and real stories but it's pretty fucking obvious when they're smacked up and trying to keep their story together. There was one legend in particular who had his story down to a fucking T who rode a bicycle around town all day. "Hi I'm Mike, listen, I'm not a bad guy. I have type 1 diabetes and my family is over at x nearby restaurant and we're all very hungry. Do you have any change that could help go toward a meal for us?" He approched me multiple times with the same exact fucking story a few times a week without even realizing it. Any time you said ok, let's go over there and meet them and I'll buy you guys a few sandwiches, he would just say he had to go. You know these people are all full of shit but it's hard not to feel bad for them at times.
