Well, the Conservatives won the last election by a landslide. And Rishi was elected as an MP. British people have never voted for the Prime Minister, it is simply the leader of the most popular party.

There was no vote. He lost a leadership contest that Conservative party members voted on (party members as in the general public that are registered as part of the party). Are Liz, who won the leadership contest (and who also has an A Level in Further Maths and a nice rack), got the boot after like 2 weeks for daring to slightly change economic policy and then he was installed with no vote outside of Conservative MPs.

how come there is no re-election once the current PM resigns? Or letting the biggest opposition party form a government?
The current style of constitution encourages people like Truss who take office, resign and then get a huge "pension" (115000 pound/year) for ruining the country

Because we already had an election that created Parliament. The fact the leader of the biggest party changed doesn't really matter. People vote for their local MP, not the Prime Minister.
