This is going to sound weird, but as a high functioning autist, I think it’s our predilection towards surrounding ourselves with “textures” that we like. Textures are not just literal, but also extend to lighting preferences, perfect pocket weight distribution, the exact right type of music, and perhaps a gendered self image. Autists tend to make things they like a part of themselves (ie. I like Thomas the Tank Engine, so Trains will be a major part of my life). I think heterosexual autists fall into the trap of imbuing femininity into themselves because they like women, this is why a lot of autistic troons are “lesbians”. I also think fellow autists like the bright colors and crave a sense of unconditional acceptance that only women/“marginalized groups” are provided. Luckily, I enjoy the texture of masculinity, but I can understand where things go wrong. For example, I am drawn to the aesthetics of Barbie and Lisa Frank (externally).
