If people do have a "soul" then it doesn't have most of the components that make people intelligent. People face cognitive decline as they get older and we lose our memories over time. We lose most of our cognitive abilities after we die because damage to the brain can make us lose them. The only way that wouldn't be the case would be if the brain was actively hindering our abilities. That is less likely than the idea that the brain enhances our abilities and by losing it, we would lose all of our memories and almost all of our abilities. Also if people can go unconscious then there's no reason why people couldn't go into a state of permanent unconsciousness.
