The problem is that to have a rig set up and running long enough to shoot a movie would cost more than any movie set ever. And also everything is dangerous and can kill/maim you if you fuck up, so it is a terrible place to have any kind of hollywood people. I cannot really think of a way to have a movie film crew on a rig, that is not even really operating, for that long, without some idiot getting himself killed.

The money's good. You just have to keep telling yourself that. Even after, at least for us Amerifats, Uncle Sam takes his bite out of our ass, it's still pretty good money. Especially for a young single guy in shape. I did it for a couple of years a few years back. If you don't expect to do anything other than construction in your life, it can lead to a pretty good life if you work hard and stick with it. For me, two years was enough and I switched back into IT.

What I didn't like was that I wasn't exactly set to come back at any time. When my 3 months were done, I was basically unemployed until enough time passed that they would let me apply to work for them again. That third rotation, my sup called me to see if I wanted to work with him again and by then at least I got stable into a crew.

It was monotonous and boring. Take some books and games if you go. And there's no privacy, so don't think you're going to be watching porn and wanking on your very little down time unless you get an all gay crew and you're all into that stuff... lmao looking at you norweigans...

A friend of a friend suggested joining the elevator building union. It starts at $31/hr and after five years they pay $62/hr.
My job is really easy and inside a climate controlled building, and I don't have to worry about getting cut in half.

I worked on rigs for almost 10 years. My job, was just me sitting in an air conditioned trailer, recording and interpreting telemtry from a tool that was at the bottom of the drill string. I didn't do any "manual labor" and I can tell you 99% of the guys out there weren't doing manual labor most of the time. When the rig is drilling its almost a completely automated process, the driller sits in an air conditioned office and operate the top drive via computers. The actual roughnecks are hiding in a corner somewhere sleeping the prior nights hangover off. The only time these guys really work is when you finish a well and have to trip pipe out of the hole and move the rig to the next hole.

Jobs on sea are hard, I've worked on a fishing boat and on a pearling boat and it's the toughest work I've done with long hours, rewarding if you do it for a short time, hell if you're doing it a longer time. Fishermen are a special breed and I imagine it's the same for an oil rig.

dont listen to this guy, i was on an oil rig as a drill boy, my job was to turn this giant crank along with several other gentlemen that would turn the drill at the bottom of the ocean to get to the oil. it is extremely difficult to drill into such deep rock beneath the sea, think that crazy turning wheel they made arnold work on in the movie conan the barbarian. drill boys got it rough.

Very true, i worked at an oil rig as a shovel man, it takes a lot of coal that has to shoveled into the reactor for the rig to run, very hard work. All has to be done by hand, just me and a handful of others, we had to shovel 80k lbs of coal every day to keep the rig running. And if you couldn't keep pace they threw over board with the shovel and told ya to swim back to the shore. But i did get a shiny nickel for it every day.

I am a ROV senior pilot tech/sub eng.

I make 650 a day, I work 180 days a year... all plane/helicopter tickets are paid for by company, I get the air miles.

It is pretty sweet honestly. If I choose to work over 180 days a year it becomes 1.5 times day... then if there is a holiday I get the 1.5x2 so I get 1950$ for that day.

It's not hard you just need to know hydrolics, electrical, software, a bit of physics and have good 3d spacial reasoning. Obviously you must have experience with subsea infrastructure and drone type flying skills because you are doing critical operations on multimillion $ equipment 9500ft under the sea.

I have a youtube and I frequent/x/ I post videos about it so you might recognize me.

I'm obsessed with the big fin squid and I build rovs in my downtime.
5 years from now I should be making 1100 a day minimum

You have yo try super hard and really put 100% of your effort towards this career... you have to be above average IQ and they prefer ex military
( I was marine corps)... this is about the same stress levels and requires the skill of a fighter jet pilot.

I would recomend ROV if you have a good understanding of hydrolics and some experience with mechanical engineering.

Get a drone and practice because it's kinda like that. Just emphasize to your company how much you are interested in ROVs and have a passion to learn.

This is what you will be doing if you are wire line at shlumberger, haliburton, or baker. Rough necks get dirty, you will get dirty too if you work wirelines or perf jobs at any of the above companies. The pay is good but the environment is micromanaged to hell and can be dangerous. You’re not going to be on the rig. The only college types on a rig would be some sort of petroleum/mechanical engineer. Everyone else got there by working their way up through the ranks of workers. Someone with an MBA would be onshore working in an office monitoring the rig remotely with occasional trips to the rig. The money should be comparable to other industries for that skill set. Understand that a tool pusher on “your” rig might make more than you do. You can find an MBA pretty easy and teach them the industry. Good luck trying to teach someone to be a tool pusher (superintendent of the rig) from a classroom or without decades of experience.
