eh, my japanese is very basic, basically non-existent. i don't know if i have time to learn words but i'll try. should i try to learn hiragana and katakana first? or just spoken words?

i think you're better off learning speech only unless you plan on reading something that you own thats in hiragana or katakana since learning them mightn't be any use for reading signs since it'll be in kanji with only few hiragana.
